Title: Horizontally banded xmas tree help needed
Post by: skulltronix on February 13, 2017, 04:24:32 PM
Hi!
I'm building a new xmas tree costume to wear on my Segway Mini in 2017. I'm using ws2813 strips set into aluminum channels. (Just like the ceiling I just finished). The tree will be 8 feet high.  5 feet diameter at the base. A strip of lights will be at every 4 inches in height.  So there will be a decreasing number of lights for each band as they get higher. 6 less per band actually. 1800 total LEDs.
So the bands will be in these numbers of LEDs (30 per meter strips)

I have asked Ray Wu to make up all the strips.

If using a Pi3 with Picap how would you wire these?  And will the Picap handle this many LEDs  (assuming power directly to the LEDs with power injection)?

The strips will be 5V running off 6 volt LION or LIPOLY batteries with a voltage regulator. 12v batteries are also still in consideration.

And... does anyone have suggestions on how the model should be set up?

As to choice of products: Lightweight, less battery draw, easy to mount, LEDs are protected.

As to choice of Horizontal VS Vertical strips of lights: Less lights (see above), More even coverage, Tree will be easily collapsible for storage.

And my wife has requested I add lighted ornaments.  Anyone have a suggestions for them?
Thanks!
