Falcon Player (FPP) / To use USB or not to use USB
« Last post by algerdes on August 18, 2019, 08:56:00 PM »
This discussion has gone around before, but I'm trying to get it down in one place.

I have just flashed all my SSD chips to the latest version of FPP - 3.1 - and have "grown" the file system on each to the max - usually 16 GB.

I am looking at whether or not to continue with my practice of using the USB Flash Drives as my play drives, or to convert to putting the data/media on the SSD.  Your reasons for and against using the USB Flash Drives is important, and I would love to hear what you have to say.  Remember that I don't think anything could be considered "the right way", just looking for reasons to go one way or the other.

On top of my thoughts is the reliability, speed, and sizing of the SSD vs. a top quality USB Stick.
Secondly, has anyone had the SSD go "belly up" during a show, and if so, how fast were you able to recover? In addition, what did it take to make sure you could recover?

I'm pretty sure more questions will arise, but until then - I'll start with these.

Thanks in Advance for chiming in on this.

David, that was my thought as well.

A nice feature request for down the road, and this would probably be through Xlights, would be to allow users to pick multiple ports per strings for large props.

So instead of just being able to select a single port, if you have multiple strings, you can specify multiple ports.

Dan,

I'm using DDP. Discussions earlier this year convinced me this is the way to go with a matrix the size of mine -- I didn't do it during last years holiday season because I wasn't sure how to set it up.

Okay - Bridge Mode Interval set to 100ms, and not the default of 50.  Question, though: when running the matrix in my display, I'll run it as a Remote player, right? That way, the media file (in my case, it will be mostly movie clips) will be stored on the BBB SD card and it will get triggered when to play said file from the Master player, which, in my case, is the Pi 3B+.

Sounds like a manual setup as ZCPP cannot figure out that you want to do. Just use universe/start channel for that prop.

Iíve got some of the 4 port ones I can probably let go.  Let me see how many I have.  Interested in those?

Yes, I was able to pick up a F16V1 and an F8, so I'm good there.

I understand the pixlenet stuff is way old, just hoping someone has a few they don't need.

This unit runs as standalone and no plugins. Outputs 281x 2 x 1200 channels. When I rollback by developer.php it seems to disapear.Maybe it some leftover, have been running for many years without any reinstallation. I will take another sd card and make new 3.1 install and see how it goes.

F48 Pixel Controller / Re: F48 only lights 1st pixel on string during test

Yes, it's connected to the P1-4 jack on the left of the board, but thanks for the thought.

A little more info.  I tried clicking the Add Smart Receiver button on the String Port screen, but to no avail.  The display went from starting at port 1-4 to starting at port 1a-4a, but the flashing was the same.

I changed the test sequence to the Green Ramp, and I could see the green color attempting to come through on several of the other pixels in the string, but then immediately changes to a white color.  It seems like there is more data being sent to the string.

I also noticed 4 jumpers labeled T1-T4, and 2 DIP switches labeld Mode in the upper left corner of the receiver board.  Anyone know what those are for?
This from David Pitts:
There is a legend indicating the jumper settings on the back of each Smartreceiver.

off, off = Regular Receiver
off, on = A
on, off = B
on , on = C
I don't have a Smartreciever board so I am not the greatest resource. I would certainly try to isolate the problem by using as many different combinations of boards, ports, Cat5 cables etc to see if you can pinpoint the exact part that isn't working.
