Title: FPP 2.6 Now Available
Post by: dkulp on January 10, 2019, 06:12:58 AM

New Features:
Bug Fixes:
Upgrade Instructions:
If you have a system running 2.4 or 2.5.x, you can go to the FPP about page (about.php) and click on the "Manual Update" button. At that point, a big green "Upgrade" bar should appear. You will get all the improvements above except those marked with the "requires re-imaging" notes on the release note for all the versions is upgrading through. Note: there are a LOT of changes in this release. The "Upgrade" button will take several minutes. BeagleBones should take about 15 minutes. Newer Pi 3's are about 10 minutes. Single core Pi's may take over 30 minutes.

At this point, there are no images for 2.6. You need to install the latest 2.5 image and do the "Manual Update" steps above.   2.5.3 images are found at:   https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/releases/tag/2.5.3

Regarding the new FSEQ format note, I assume if we have the latest version of Vixen (3.5u4) we are good to go? Or is there something more to do? I don't see anything in Vixen for the Sparse data options.. not that I intend to use them quite yet.

Thanks for all the work that goes into FPP! I am always impressed by the enhancements!

Vixen 3.5u4 was released several months ago so I would not assume it has support for FSEQ v2 format.
I would assume the Vixen developers are looking at it and will announce when an appropriate update is available.
I would also assume that FPP v2.6 still handles FSEQ v1 format files that are created by current versions of Vixen and xLights.

The Playlist selector for items is showing ._ files. I'm sure this was done when I browsed to the FPP using the SAMBA and the wonderful system like that. However; can we parse those out? .

No.   Both xLights and Vixen need to be updated to take full advantage of it.   The next build of xLights will have a new "FPP Connect" dialog that will do this for xLights users.    That said, 2.6 reads/plays the old files just fine.   You don't really need to do anything.

There is a "command line" program on FPP that can be used to convert sequences that are already there, but you don't really need to.

Thanks for the info! So I can upgrade FPP and continue operating as is. In the future the other programs will catch up but until they do FPP will still use their current FSEQ outputs.

Does the sparse format support channel gaps? For example on my PiCaps I output DMX 1-512, Mini Trees 44545-46080 on output 1, and Singing Face 64001-64512 on output 2. So ideally I would be able to have the file just have those channels in it.

Also are we able to send sparse and compressed files from the Master to the Remote? Something like master asks remote what channels it is using, remote replies and then the master generates the sparse compressed files and rsyncs them over.

Thanks,
Richard

It does, but it's not used yet.  Right now, when FPP starts up, it collects a single range and records that.  xLights then uses that single range.   Eventually, we'll get FPP updated to collect individual ranges and such, but that's not there yet.   Maybe for 2.7.

Compressed yes, sparse - not at this time.   The FPP Connect in xLights will detect FPP instances running in master and will default to sending them the full (but compressed) sequence.  Thus, if you hit the "sync to remotes" button in FPP, it will send the full fseq that is at least usable.   Part of the issue is that it MAY not actually save any time on syncing the sequences.  The compression takes time and memory and the Pi's/BBB's don't have the fastest CPU's or a ton of memory.   Thus, it's likely faster to just sync the full (but compressed) fseq file over than it would be for it to generate a sparse version, particularly for things like P5 panels and such where there is still a lot of data in there that needs to be compressed.

I have a patch to hide files starting with a dot and will get it into master.

Chris: Thanks.

Is there some information about the playlist passing arguments to the plugins? I think this is something that is HUGE and I would like to understand the JSON messages within the plugin.

Thanks

Just for "fun" I updated via developer.php to v2.5 from Master. Then upgraded to v2.6.  Saw that FPP started normally and all appeared well.
Then changed back to Master.   I like seeing the updates as they get introduced.

Is there some information about the playlist passing arguments to the plugins? I think this is something that is HUGE and I would like to understand the JSON messages within the plugin.

Right now, I think there are still gaps in the playlist/plugin integration in FPP v2.x.  The work I have been doing recently has been focused on getting data from the plugin to the playlist as part of the more generic 'Dynamic' playlist entry, but I think there is a lot more we can do going the other direction.  The Dynamic entry can get its data from multiple sources, including plugins.  The data read by the Dynamic entry is in the normal playlist JSON format for a Playlist Entry.  This is part of why the plugin I am working on uses normal FPP playlists to hold the data for the item to play.

I would like to think about  what the next iteration of the plugin interface looks like to see if anything I am working on should change before we get too far into 2019.  Maybe we should open another thread to discuss that interface.

Yes, I'm open to creating that discussion. One of the things that I saw in the Plugin option on the playlist generation page, would be nice if you could direct it to a specific plugin, else all plugins would react to the callback script data coming to them.

That code isn't even hooked up yet.  I should have disabled that in the Playlist Editor.  The PlaylistEntryPlugin class is just a constructor and destructor, it has no meat currently.

Mine did a 2.5.3 to 2.5.3.2 update and then the 2.6 upgrade bar appeared. The Pi upgraded fine, but the BBB took about 20 mins to update, vs 10 for the Pi. Both appear to be running 2.6 fine

 • "FPP After Hours" plugin available from plugin list (internet radio stations)
 • Maybe I'm getting in over my head, but I was curious what this feature is, or what it does? (I'm asking because I haven't updated to 2.6 and played with it.)

I used it this year..  Basically, when the show isn't running, it broadcasts an internet radio station over your fm transmitter.  Instead of broadcasting silence, there is Christmas music.    You add a lead-in to you show to turn if off and a lead out to turn it back on.

I had people that would show up 20 minutes before the show started.   They had something to listen to.  :)

What ^^ he said...

I believe that will play music on your fm transmitter when there is no show playing. It will source it from interneet radio stations/urls?

FPP After Hours sounds pretty cool, but I've wondered.....

Even if your FM transmitter is within the FCC unlicensed power limits, isn't it still technically illegal to RE-BROADCAST another station without their "explicit written consent"?  I didn't think the unlicensed-low-power clause overrides the no-re-broadcasting clause.

When I follow the upgrade instructions I just get 2.5.3 installed again. Click ABOUT: Manual Update - No GREEN UPDATE BAR appears - it just goes ahead an reinstalls 2.5.3

## Upgrade Instructions: If you have a system running 2.4 or 2.5.x, you can go to the FPP about page (about.php) and click on the "Manual Update" button.  At that point, a big green "Upgrade" bar should appear. I believe that happens if a previous attempt was started but never completed.  Then you get stuck in this loop.   The fix is to use the developer page (http://{fpp.ip.address}/developer.php) to switch branches.  First switch back to a branch previous to the one you're currently at (like 2.4).  After that completes successfully, go back to the developer page and switch to the latest branch (like 2.6) and let it complete.  It takes a while so make sure you keep that webpage and window open for at least 10-15 minutes or more

I am trying to get this to work, but I must be missing something. I installed the plugin, and updated it, set a radio station URL, and set up the SoundBlaster, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I set up a playlist with the lead in to be fpp-after-hours-stop.php then had my playlist and then the lead out was fpp-after-hours-start.php. If I am looking at the After Hours Music plugin page, the Now Playing will pop up for just a second and then go away. If I click on the Run Start Script button, the Now Playing will show a message but then turn off.
What am I missing?

Any more explicit instructions for the PocketBeagle?  I just got one from dkulp, and while the instructions that came with the PocketBeagle were a start, I could use a lot more help.  If someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

After I flash the image to the SD card and restart the PocketBeagle I either can't get my PC to recognize it, or, when it does it FFP says I can expand my card memory and after I do my PC definitely can't find it.

If you are streaming a FCC licensed station, I believe that might be correct.  I think that rule was generally taking the input of XX.X FM and rebroadcasting to XXX.X FM.  (or AM).  If you are streaming some other source, or a internet only station, I don't think those rules would apply.  I am not a lawyer, but that was my understanding.

How are you connecting to your PocketBeagle? Until you get everything set up, it is best to directly connect it to your computer via a USB cable. So it looks like you were able connect when you got the page where it tells you to expand the SD Card? You don't expand the SD card from your computer, you expand it by going to the FPP settings.

That's where I did it at. I tried not expanding but with same results. I don't know if it's Windows, my SD card, or the PocketBeagle. Something gives, just don't know what.

You should go to the Zoom room and someone could give you a hand, that is the quickest and best way to get problems resolved. I have learned a lot by going there and just listening. Can you show screenshots of each step and what you are seeing? You say that you can't get your PC to see the PB and then you say you get a message about expanding the SD card so it must be seeing it? With some more information, I am sure we will get you working!

I installed 2.6 on 2 Pi3b+'s that are setup identical, When I go to xlights and use the FPP connect it uploads a 2GB FSEQ to one Pi at around 120MB and the other Pi 11K which obviously is not going to play right. Not sure what to check or do besides formatting the SD card and starting over which I would like to avoid. thanks!

this is fixed on my end, the "interface" in output panel area was not set to anything because my usb to ethernet adapter unplugged, once I set it to ETH0 it is uploading to both now. thanks

The new code for Xlights has a feature to compress and upload only the code that each FPP needs. I don't know if that is the issue without more information but I have a feeling that is what is going on. On the FPP that is only 11K, do you have a lot less props/pixels assigned to it and are they props that aren't used that much in your sequence? Connect a string of lights to one port and play the sequence and see what happens!

they are identical Pi's to control 2, 54 panel P10 matrix screens and they play the same videos, FSEQ and so on. its tough to hook up anything to it being they are made to control a Colorlight card mounted to the screens which are now in storage being the season is over

I don't know for a fact but I think maybe there is still work to do either on FPP side or xLights side for FPP Connect.  I have a simple 146 pixel prop (a church sign with the Boscoyo letters TNC) and tried the new FPP connect and my sequences did not work the same at all.  Went back to using the FPP upload function for the sequences (full sequence file) and they worked correctly again.  (Yes, I re-rendered and save in xLights as well as making sure FPP was on latest version before trying new FPP connect).  It's still mid-January and a lot of time before display season again (for my small year-round stuff I can stick with the old method and just keep trying the new way every once in a while until it's all tweaked).  Just my opinion and my experience.  Others absolutely will differ.

Ickk.... that's bad.  That means the update to config level 40 didn't work properly.  Unfortunately, it's not a "push button" retry.   You would need to "sudo nano /etc/fpp/config_version" to edit the file and change it to "37", then hit the manual update button to have it re-try the config updates.   Pay attention to the log while its updating to make sure you see lines like ">>SUCCESS upgraded to config version 38"

That's the issue.  The dpkg database seems to be messed up.   I'd start off and do exactly what it says.  Set config back to 37, then try again.

Update...
So I reverted back to 37 and it failed at upgrading config 39. So after it updated not FPPD still not running. I Ran the manual update again and again it failed at updating config 39 and still no FPPD. I then ran apt --fix-broken install and then ran manual install on FPP again and success. The FPPD is up and running.

Unknown means it is not finding / connecting to Github where the files are located.

Check your internet connectivity. Make sure you have a good DNS entry (I use 8.8.8.8 )

SOLVED I am trying a clean install of 2.5 so I can upgrade to 2.6. I am having a problem of it not loading. Gets about 1/2 way through & says
"Hold until boot process finishes up"
That is as far as it goes. Any idea what is wrong?

It was dumb _ _ _ me that made the error. I forgot to plug in the Eithernet cable all is good now

I'm trying to upgrade to 2.6, but I get the error that it cannot connect to Github to pull the download. Do I need to be on a wired ethernet connection or should it work on wireless?

This is a somewhat common problem - you cant get to the internet from your pi. Quick fix is to switch your wifi fpp settings back to dhcp - reboot - then try again.
Take note of your settings prior to flipping it back to dhcp.

Yes.  My Pis are never wired anymore even at initial setup (thanks to the default hotspot now).

Make sure you have both DNS populated.  I usually put 8.8.8.8 (google) as my secondary.

Looks like going to DHCP nd the wired connection worked.

They usually only make images for major releases so I doubt there will be images for 2.6....

Can you then upgrade from 2.5.3 to 2.6 when connected to the mini USB port? When I try here is what I get:

FPP Manual Update
Stopping fppd..

Can not access github, unable to pull git updates
==========================================================================
Restarting fppd..

Also, how do you get the time pulled from an NTP server. I put in an IP address but no go.  I can ping my router but is being connected by USB to the computer blocking the time and manual updates?

Thanks in advance.

You likely don't have a connection to the Internet DNS.  Try using 8.8.8.8 for a DNS server.

Here is the problem:

Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::a890:5556:4d2d:cde6%11
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.3
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.1

Ethernet adapter Ethernet 2:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::4553:a78c:65c7:e0ef%8
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.7.1
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.252
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

FPP keeps showing up with the same IP address as the router.  I have set the PocketBeagle in FPP to a static IP of 192.168.7.2, BUT you see the results I am getting.  The Ethernet 2 adapter is the PocketBeagle connected via USB to the computer.

Help?

go into the network settings of your computer and set the DNS of FPP on the Wifi side to the gateway of the laptop.  You should be able to click on the Wiki help stuff and it take you to the site.  once you can do that try updating again.  I just went through hell getting my set-up to work and the DNS stuff was one of them.

Can you just connect the BBB to your home network instead of tethering it to your PC?  If not, you will probably have to go into the filesystem on the BBB and update it to use a different subnet.  This involves editing at least a couple files, maybe more.

This is a PocketBeagle from dkulp.  Do you use a USB to RJ45 male to connect to the router?  I am REALLY a Noob at this kind of thing, so I am sorry for the dumb questions.  If the USB isn't right, hoe do you get into the network?

The pocket beagle does not have RJ45 ports! What you need to do is to setup a wireless connection on your PocketBeagle. To do this, connect the PocketBeagle to your computer with a Micro USB cable. You will need a WiFi adapter on the PocketBeagle.
After you connect, go to the network setup and make sure that you have your wireless network setup. You will need to enter your wireless SSID and password for your wireless network.
If that doesn't work, send us a screenshot of your wireless setup on the FPP
BTW, I love the F8PB, is that what you got?

You can  use a usb to ethernet(RJ45)  instead of usb to wifi if that is what you want. After setting up the network, click on update interface and then restart networking.

Yep.  However, I've heard reports that not all of the gigabit USB->Network adapters work.  I was going to send a link to the one I use, but it's no longer available on Amazon.  :(

Found it on ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/p/QacQoc-Aluminum-USB-3-0-3-port-Portable-Data-Hub-With-1-Gbps-Ethernet-Port-Rj45/25023517243?iid=283335562595&chn=ps

I like it as it has a 3 port hub built in.  Thus, I put a wifi adapter in the hub and I can bring it up on ethernet and configure the wifi.  I see a few similar ones on Amazon.  I'll have to order one to see if they work the same.

This one worked good for me with the pocketscroller last year.  Should work with the F8-PB as well.

You may want to go to the XLights Zoom meeting.  If you go to http://xlights.org/ and click on Zoom Meeting on the right-hand side.  There are often several people there that can help troubleshoot things like this with you.

If test mode works, then most likely there is something wrong with your Xlights setup or channel numbering on the models.  I would make a very simple test sequence that lights up a small prop and then make sure the channels for that model are assigned to the correct controller, controller output, and channel range.  Posting a screenshot of your setup is helpful, too.

Post your issue in a new thread to get the best repsonse.  Especially since this does not seem like a 2.6 issue.
