Title: [COMPLETE][GROUP BUY] BeagleBone/PocketBeagle based controllers
Post by: dkulp on February 04, 2019, 12:20:07 PM
Please read all info and ask any questions before ordering.

Group-Buy/Pre-Sale closing date is March 1, 2019. Payments are required at the time of order.  Orders will not be processed until payment received.   It will then likely take about 6-8 weeks for manufacture and ship from China at which point I will do further testing before shipping out to you.  Deliveries likely beginning of May.

This is a group buy thread for various "capes" that are mounted either to a full size BeagleBone Black or PocketBeagle that are running FPP.  The capes in this group buy include the F8-PB, F8-B, PocketScroller, F32-B, and F40D-PB.

More information about each controller can be found at:
F8-PB: https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10533.0.html (https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10533.0.html)
F8-B (v2): https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10534.0.html (https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10534.0.html)
F32-B (v2): https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10538.0.html (https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10538.0.html)
F40D-PB: https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10597.0.html (https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10597.0.html)
PocketScroller: https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10598.0.html (https://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,10598.0.html)

The boards will be sold completely assembled and will include all fuses and connectors.  The PocketBeagle based capes can optionally be purchased with the PocketBeagle pre-mounted.

Prices:
If you don't purchase the PocketBeagle pre-mounted, you will need one with female headers mounted on the bottom.  (I will include the required female headers)

Shipping (Lower 48 US)  - Except for the F32-B, these are fairly small.  2 can fit in a Priority Mail small flat rate box at $8.   Up to 4 will ship in a slightly larger box for $11.   Shipping for more than 4 or for the F32-B will be via a Priority Mail medium flat rate box at $14.  (up to 3 F32-B's can fit into a single medium box)

Post below your requested items/qty and send payment with shipping to dan@kulp.com  On PayPal payment include forum username in comment field.  Please make sure shipping address is included.

Example Order:

Dan,

I didn't see it mentioned, but I'm guessing these PocketScrollers will be V1.1 (or newer) with the additional "E" signal to support 1:32 scan panels?
Also, are you no longer offering your V2 Octroscrollers?

They will be the 1.2 version which is pictured in the "Intro" thread.  They have the working E line.    The differences between v1.1 and v1.2 are:
1) Surface mount buffer chip
2) Additional ESD protection/prevention chip for the USB port to prevent static discharge issues plugging/unplugging USB devices while on

Pinout/capabilities are exactly the same.

I have plenty of blank boards for them if anyone is interested.   My son is no longer interested in assembling them.  :(     I can easily throw the blank boards into any other order for $1.   I could also assemble a few kits if anyone is interested.   I'd need to double check, but I should have all the ports and buffers and such for at least 4 or 5 kits.

I also have blank boards for "F8-B v1.00" which is a fully through hole version of the F8-B minus the expansion port.   I don't have all the parts for full kits, but again, I can throw a blank board into any order for $1.   I have some of the parts, but definitely not all of them.

If someone wants something to learn how to solder on, they are great.  You could likely get a controller up and running fairly cheap and learn to solder in the process. The F8-B you could just order/populate the parts that are "required" for your use case to be even cheaper.   Example:  don't need the differential outputs?  don't populate the differential chips and RJ45 ports.

Dang it I should have waited on my order that would have been great for me to learn to solder on. Oh well!

Um... Hold on guys... I think I'm out of F8-B blank boards....    I only had a handful of them as they were a small order for prototyping.    I do have plenty (>25) of OctoV2 boards.

I need to dig around on my shelves and see what other useless stuff I can pawn off on all of you.  :)

Update:  boards are now ordered.   Please make sure your entry in the first post is correct.   Make sure I have the correct types of boards you wanted and whether you have paid or not.

Also, I have ordered quite a few extras of each of the boards.  Thus, if you missed the cutoff date, don't worry.    Feel free to keep adding orders to this thread for now.  If it looks like I'll run out, I'll officially mark this thread as closed.

Thanks for all the orders.  I'm very excited to see the number of orders and number of boards ordered.  Definitely exceeded my initial expectations.

I didn't see it mentioned, but I'm guessing these PocketScrollers will be V1.1 (or newer) with the additional "E" signal to support 1:32 scan panels?

They will be the 1.2 version which is pictured in the "Intro" thread.  They have the working E line.    The differences between v1.1 and v1.2 are:
1) Surface mount buffer chip
2) Additional ESD protection/prevention chip for the USB port to prevent static discharge issues plugging/unplugging USB devices while on

Pinout/capabilities are exactly the same.

Quote
Also, are you no longer offering your V2 Octroscrollers?

Dan,

Do you have BOMís for the F8-B and Octoscroller capes? If available already could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

I'm going to have to dig through some notes for the F8-B.  The Octo is relatively simple:

2 of 2x23 Male headers 2.54 (connect to BBB) - DigiKey 1528-2021-ND
1 of Buffer IC - SN74HCT541N - DigiKey 296-1655-5-ND
8 of 2x8 shrouded headers - DigiKey 732-2095-ND
3.5mm screw terminal - DigiKey ED2740-ND

I'll see what I can come up with for the F8-B.  The issue with the F8-B is that some of the parts (pixel connectors and fuses for example) are expensive on DigiKey/Mouser, but dirt cheap on eBay.

It will then likely take about 6-8 weeks for manufacture and ship from China at which point I will do further testing before shipping out to you.  Deliveries likely beginning of May.

Any update on timing for these? Not being impatient, just curious.

Since no one has one of these yet, there wouldn't be any pictures.   The best option would be my walk through video at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riS5lvDUubE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riS5lvDUubE&feature=youtu.be)

At around 3:10, I pull out one of the older F32-B v1's so you can see how I mounted it.   Another one shown around 8 minutes in.

I wanted to give everyone another status update:   I've spent a bit of time testing this weekend.   Good news and bad news.

First: the good news.   All four board are driving pixels very well.   FPP boots up (2.7 required), pixels can be configured, pixels light up.   Also, the OLED worked and displayed the basic network stuff.   The RTC works.   The temperature and voltage sensors are working. Things were looking promising.

Then I hit the bad news:  the supplier apparently received a bad reel of push buttons.   Only about 1/2 of the push buttons work.   For the PocketBeagle designs (F40D-PB and F8-PB), it somehow worked out that for the most part, either both buttons work or neither button works.  Thus, I have some working boards.    For the full size beagle boards, they have 3 buttons (power button added) and, for the most part, each board has either 1 or 2 buttons not working.  I only have a handful of fully working boards.

I've contacted the board manufacturer to figure out how best to proceed.   The push buttons are simple to replace so I'll likely have to do it, but I need to order new buttons (or they will need to ship me new buttons) and I'll need to spend some time that I don't have to replace them.   (baseball season is rough)

Anyway, I was hoping to be able to ship out most of the orders tomorrow, but that's not going to happen.   I'm going to try and ship some stuff out, but most orders will take a bit longer.

Yes... I'm completely frustrated.  :(

That's some bad luck. I completely understand. Please don't feel rushed to get mine shipped.  It's early and I know the basic foot print so I can do everything else and then pop it in a box when it arrives.

What buttons are needed? I'd like to receive my boards as soon as reaonably possible, because i need them this summer. I don't mind to solder them myself, i may already have the right switches in my mancave.

They are 4.5mm, surface mount push buttons.  Something like:
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/612-TL3305AF160QG (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/612-TL3305AF160QG)

The good news is that they are fairly easy to replace.   If you look the attached photo, you can see that they are relatively far from other SMD components and the SMD pads are relatively large and well separated.   Thus, a hot air reflow station should be able to handle it easily .  Blast them with some hot air to remove, dab of solder past on each pad, place the new switch, blast again.   The F8-PB is a bit trickier as both button are right next to the end of the expansion header so I don't know what the blast of hot air might do to that.   The pads are large enough that a soldering iron can also be used so that's an option.

They are shipping me a full reel of replacement switches.   I should get them later this week, likely Thursday.   I hope to be able to fix enough of the boards over the weekend to cover the group buy boards and ship them out early next week.   Thus, there are three options:

1) I can ship out boards today/tomorrow with defective buttons.  You'll need to source the buttons and replace yourself.

2) I can ship out boards on Thursday/Friday and I can include a strip of buttons that you can then use to replace.   Again, not hard.

3) You can wait until I can fix them and ship next week sometime.

Let me know.  Happy to accommodate whichever you prefer.

Yea... One of the things I DON'T want to do is ship back to china, have them fix it, then ship back to me as that would be weeks and be expensive.   They were able to verify that the reel of buttons they used was defective (they still had some left in the reel) so they were willing to ship me a new reel (after verifying that the buttons work by testing the first few) using an express shipping so it should only be a few days (assuming US customs doesn't hold it too long).    Thus, the big issue will be on me to find time this weekend to actually fix them.

I'd be happy to take option 2. I'm capable of replacing parts and you seem to have more than enough on your plate as it is.

Some of you will start receiving boards very shortly (or may have already).  I'm trying to fix boards as fast as I can and ship as soon as I can, but three are 63 orders and over 130 boards which takes time.   And paypal seems to be throttling my purchasing of shipping labels now.  :(

However, there is an important note for everyone:  except for the PocketScroller, NONE of these boards will work with FPP 2.6.   They all require FPP 2.7.   Thus, start downloading the new image and preparing the SD cards now.     There are a few reasons for requiring 2.7:

1) OLED support - this is new in 2.7.   Thanks to Wired Watts, the quantity was more than expected which brought my cost down a bit.  Thus, I'm including an OLED display and a battery for the RTC with each of the boards.  In order for it to work, you need 2.7.  (I'm not mounting it, so make sure you look in the box for the little plastic case with the OLED in it)

2) Sensors - the boards all have temperature sensors and the ones with direct attached pixels have voltage sensors.   These require 2.7 as sensor support is new in 2.7.

3) Pin out - 2.6 doesn't have the pinouts needed.   The F40D-PB is completely new.   The other 3 boards have completely different pinouts than the older versions.  The F8-PB needed a new pinout to free up the I2C pins required by the OLED/sensor.   The F8-B and F32-B needed a new pinout to avoid the P8-10 pin on the Beagle.   The reason for that is that I discovered that the SanCloud Beaglebone Enhanced does not route anything to that pin.  Since I recommend using "industrial" versions of the BBB and the SanCloud is the only industrial version generally available year round (for the most part), making sure the boards work on it was important.   Anyway, 2.7 is required to be able to support the new pinouts.

As I mentioned:  Wire Watts has purchased a bunch of the boards and will likely be offering something related to them in the future.  They are the reason the boards have the OLED display as well as the push buttons (Ken demanded the "test" button, I kind of ran with the idea).   The boards you are getting are more feature rich than I originally planned at the start of the group buy specifically because of the Wired Watts.  I highly recommend adding Wired Watts to your lists of "go to" vendors for pretty much anything light related.   A big thanks to them!

Got my order. Thanks Dan. Imaged uSD card with 2.7 for the F40D-PB and F8-PB. No problems with installation and setup. Need to dig out some props to test pixels. Looking good.

What happens with V1 boards (last year version)?   In particular, I have several F8-PB (v1?) from last year that ran great on previous version of FPP.    Will those need to remain on older version of FPP or will 2.7 have a way to support both types of pinout (V1/V2?  old/new?)

They will still work with 2.7.    FPP has, for quite a while, had the ability to select different pinouts for various boards.   There were 2 "F8-B" pinouts for example.     All the old pinouts are still there.

HOWEVER, the new boards work completely differently.   With older versions of FPP, to support a new pinout or a new board required updating the FPP code a UI and such to list the board, update the PRU code to send the code to the right pins, etc...  Supporting new boards/pinouts was a bit of an undertaking.    With 2.7, it's very very different.  The new boards have an EEPROM on them that tell FPP all the information about it.     What the name of the board is, what type of board it is (strings vs panels), what pins each string is mapped to, etc...  Thus, approved board designers can be creative with designs and FPP can somewhat adjust accordingly.     For example, if you boot up a fresh 2.7 with one of the group buy boards, you will not see the "LED Panels" page in the UI.  Since FPP knows it's a string cape that doesn't do panels, it can hide it.   It also know the exact board type and everything so the drop down list of capes on the BBB string page gets reduced to ONLY the stuff the board supports.  The EEPROM also provides default settings.  With the group buy boards, a fresh boot up to 2.7 will enable the RTC automatically with the appropriate type and will also enable the OLED with the type of OLED I ship.   Less for users to have to setup.  Also, the new EEPROM contains some information about both the cape and vendor.   You can go to the about.php page to see that.

Anyway, the new design allows a lot more flexibility going forward.   If I decide in the next "F8-PB" to change pinouts again for some reason, I can without affecting FPP or requiring an entirely new FPP release.

I am going to suggest an option to allow seeing all the options even if YOUR board does not support it.  The reason is supporting other users.  If I'm trying to help someone else, I will often open up the UI and walk through the steps that they should be taking.  It's much harder to do that if I can't see the options that they see.  Even if I see those options in red so I know that they don't work with my board, but I can see what they see.

I just received the F8-B last night. I put the new 2.7 img on and it is running. But I don't see any of the temp or voltage readings, the OLED is set up but not working.  It works on last year's F8-PB.  And the output selection will not stay on Version 3 after I save, reboot and refresh the screen.  I am probably doing something wrong any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I received my PocketBeagle and PocketScroller yesterday and put them in service on my 4W x 3H P10 matrix.  Did a fresh 32GB uSD card image of 2.7 using Etcher.  Had a couple issues.  The first was that I did not realize that the PocketBeagle has neither WiFi nor ethernet connectivity built in.  So I took the USB to Gigabit adapter that I had been using for a gigabit output from a RasPi 3B to a ColorLight card and plugged that into the Pocket and that worked fine.  Setup up the FPP installation in Bridge mode and setup the 36 universes and the 12 P10 panels.  Started testing using the Display Testing page and the colors were wrong (no big surprise).  Went back into the Panel setup and corrected that.  Then did some testing to verify that channel 1 really was on the upper left corner and that's when things did not go right.  From the best I can determine, the Front view / Rear view on the Panel setup is backwards.  My panels are fed (as viewed from the front) on the far right side and the arrows point up.  Set it up that way and when I told the test page to control channels 1 to 15, I actually got the upper left pixels of the upper right panel.  After playing around with it, I determined that it appeared to be backwards, so I changed them around to show that the panels were opposite order from reality and then it worked correctly.  Then started LOR and ran a sequence from the S5 Sequencer and it also played correctly.

The screen capture shows what I had to do to make it work right.  The crappy photo is showing the left end of the matrix as viewed from the back with the Pocket hanging from the cables.  Ignore the ColorLight card mounted behind Pocket - it is not being used at this time.  I will rebuilt that a little shortly assuming I am certain that I will use the PocketBeagle rather than the RasPi and ColorLight.  In case anyone is wondering, part of this change is NOT because I am unsatisfied with the Pi / colorLight combo (it works great), but I have now bought two Beagles to play with and recently have come up with a need for a RasPi for a totally unrelated project.  Besides, in my opinion, the ColorLight setup is a pain.(http://newburghlights.org/photos/FPP_2.7_Panel_reversed.jpg)(http://newburghlights.org/images/FPP_2.7_Panel_reversed.png)

One of my new F8-B boards seems to work fine, on the other board, the OLED will not work, I’ve tried 3 different displays that all work on the good board with no luck. I’ve also seen another issue with FPP 2.7, the cape type does not show up in IE 10, it works fine on Microsoft Edge. Any suggestions?

Can you pull the RTC battery and see if the OLED works?   Someone else just reported that I put the battery in upside down which resulted in the same symptoms.  Once the battery was removed, everything worked.

Looks like I have other issues, the cape is fine, works with one of my BBB, but wonít work on the other 2. Also, one of the BBBís that it wonít work on, I get the message FPP is stopped onthe status page with no time present even though Iím hooked to the internet and have network time enabled. When I try to restart FPP, the BBB hangs up, does this with and without the cape installed. This BBB was upgraded from 2.6,  not from a fresh image.

Thanks

I has FPP Stopped a couple times while testing.  One correction was just to click start FPPD, the other wouldn't work with that so I did a manual update...that fixed the second one.  Re-imaging to 2.7 and reloading from scratch works best.

Things I learned installing FPP 2.7, It has problems installing if a cape is installed onthe BBB, many things didnít work correctly. Make all the basic changes before you install a cape, i.e. network settings, expand memory, and anything else. I had issues with the OLED display, the RTC and a WIFI dongle, after a clean install without the cape and doing all the setup, plugged in the F8-B and all worked the 1st time, OLED, RTC self detected and the F8-B was detected, previously had issues with all of them. May not be the correct way, but it worked for me.

I had issues with one of my F8-B+ when I tried to upgrade from v2.6 Only when I did a fresh install of v2.7 and followed what Dennis mentioned about setting the network and clock before attaching the cape then all worked well.
On the kernel 4.14.71-bone17, OSBuild v2.2, the Temp2: and VIN: would not display anything but 0.0
On the kernel 4.14.109-bone21, OSBuild v2.7, all the displays are active with proper readings.

The OLED blanks out after a few minutes. Is there a setting to have it display constantly?

Dan, these are great boards. Thank you for the extra features with this group buy.

The older FPP builds had the analog inputs disabled as nothing used them up till now.   Thus, the new 2.7 image is needed for those to work.  Alternatively, you can edit the /boot/uEnv.txt file to comment out the disable_uboot_overlay_adc line.    Probably could attempt a config level update to change that.  Didn't think about it.

The OLED blanks out to avoid burn in.   If it displays the same data, it will suffer from burn in within about 6 months.   You can turn on the display again by hitting either of the buttons.

RJ45 - 380-1050-ND
Capacitor: P15810CT-ND
Resistor networks: 268-100-RC

Then 4x generic 0.1uF disc capacitors, a 6mm push button (optional).   All the ICs could be socketed, but thats up to you.

Dan,

Do you have a part number for C5?

Thanks

Isn't C5 the electrolytic capacitors mentioned above?    Really, it's optional as the buck itself does have the capacitors on it that it needs, but it's likely nice to have to keep the power a little cleaner.

The electrolytic is C6. C5 looks like another ceramic cap but is labeled 33uf. Is it supposed to be 0.33uf? I canít find 33uf ceramic, I did find 33uf tantalum caps.

Oh... Leave it blank.  I removed it from the actual F8-B v1's (which is why C6 became C5).   It's not needed.   If you DO want something there, the 0.33uF is likely the right thing.
