Title: Falcon Neo Beta Test Boards
Post by: David Pitts on November 21, 2014, 05:20:30 PM
We are going to work this new design of the NEO a bit differently. Usually I just buy a few Demo boards to test with. This time because of the demand to get into the beta I am opening it up to all that want to participate.

The Neo is a 4 layer board to help reduce switching noise by having solid power and ground planes. This adds cost to the board. The estimation on quantity of 10 is 15.00 per pcb. That also includes the shipping charges from PCB manufacturer to me. When we run a coop later that should go down considerably.

I will receive the boards and build-up one and test basic functionality. If it passes the tests (previous boards have a good track record with minimal errors - knock on wood) I will completely assemble the remaining boards and bill participants for parts and ship them for beta testing. Obviously if the board does not pass tests we will need to correct and order again (another 15.00, hope it does not come to this, most likely wont).  This will help spread the cost of the development. I will be adding an item to the store for the Neo beta. If you choose to participate just purchase from the store.

Cool was just wiring up a test batch to do some validation on these boards.

Good timing.

Neil,

I have all the boards but need to order the buffers. I am waiting to order the F16v2 parts so I can include the buffers with that order. This week I will place order.

In addition to that, the code to drive the Octoscroller cape is now in the master code branch and I will be working on the UI to try to get it done in time so that users don't have to hand-configure their systems to use the Octoscrollers when they arrive.  I have merged all code back from the BBB and RGBMatrix branches and all current development is being done in the master code branch which will be the basis for the next FPP release.

I am shipping 14 Octoscroller boards today for those that participated in the Neo beta.

Here is the list of users I am shipping to.

J. Plak
T. Willows
P. Delaney
S. Baker
B. Shaver
M. Schmenk
T. Hight
T. Blue
S. Gase
B. Vander Ploeg
N. Richards
D. Shaughnessy
R. Allison
J. Evans

I am shipping MyKroFts and the Captains when I ship some other stuff to them in a week or so.

J Back's has been shipped already.

I think that takes care of the beta. I will be placing Octoscrollers boards in store within a week.

Whoo Hoo, my paypal is burning up my pocket for the Octoscaller so I can really check out the panels and do some work with them in LSP.  Curious to see if it scales better with 32 or more vertically instead of the 10 I had last year.

I should have the config UI committed to master tonight as well.  The same UI will work for the BBB with Octoscroller and Pi using the RGBMatrix channel output.  Once I do commit this old configs won't be used because the updated code uses the new JSON config file format.  I will start a new thread in the FPP forum to field questions about the new (temporary) UI for configuring the panel layout.

I am so looking forward to receiving the octoscroller and installing the new UI to play with. I have 24 panels and still not sure what layout I will be using. going to be fun seeing that works best.

It seems I forgot to get the 2x25 headers for Octoscroller.

They can be bought here. Just cut to size.

Even though it states 18 days minimum to ship that has not been my experience with this vendor. 1.5 -2.0 weeks usually.

I can reimburse you the 1.50 if you want it. :)

If you need them quicker this vendor is in US

Otherwise where can I order one from?  I ordered everything else I needed but I forgot to order the BBB and cape which I only just worked out now I'm building the display.

I'm just after a ready to go, ready to ship board.  Do these exist or are they all DIY?  I haven't had a good look into it to be honest, I just had a last minute "OMG I haven't got the controller" moment.

So I had a closer look at the image and it seems like it's pretty much just a breakout board with 1 IC on it?  Does anyone have spare PCBs ready to ship that I could buy?

I still have a few Octoscrollers left from the Coop.  Available with or without Real Time Clock ($20 /$18 respectively + shipping).
